The Bourne Ultimatum is a phenomenal action-driven movie. It features a hard target to kill, a tougher spy to defeat, a metal-crunching car chase through Manhattan and [Spoiler Alert], a nerve-wracking assassination at London’s Waterloo station.
This great action movie used a unique set of elements to its advantage- crowded settings, tense music and suspenseful cuts to itself onto the greatest action movies’ list. Director Paul Greengrass made sure it gave us an engaging sense of jeopardy. “This is Jason Bourne, the toughest target that you have ever tracked.
He is really good at staying alive, and trying to kill him and failing just pisses him off.” This was the kind of drama that The Bourne Ultimatum brought to the early 2000’s landscape. It tops the list of top Hollywood action movies.

The graphics and soundtracks in this action movie are over the top. Axes shooting into flames are great, but this movie has even better to offer- some of the craziest stunts the cinema world has ever seen. It steps up for battle and to share its vision with the world- a need for females in power. It ranks 2nd on the list of top Hollywood action movies.

We might just have to agree with Jake Peralta here, Die Hard is the best cop movie ever created. Featuring an NYPD officer trying to save his wife and several others taken hostage by German terrorists during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles, Die Hard is close to the perfect action movie.
Die Hard isn’t emotionally-investing or character-exploring. It doesn’t pull us in with that. Instead, it gives us two hours of speed, a bold hero, witty plan making, fighting, and explosions. It gives us pure action. The story is brilliantly simple and intense and no wonder Die Hard stands so high on our list of best action movies in Hollywood. It ranks 3rd on the list of top Hollywood action movies.
4. Aliens

Aliens is one of the best action movies ever- majorly because it lets the guns do the talking. James Cameron steered the wheels of this movie until it turned into one that met its big-screen action competition head-on. It ranks 4rth on the list of top Hollywood action movies.
The original movie might’ve been moody and gothic, but this sequel was a bigger, faster, and way more amped-up interplanetary adventure. Aliens, which came out in 1986, told the kind of story that has viewers yelling “Game over, man! Game over!” at the screen from start to finish. Ellen Ripley was sent back to the planet LV-426 with a dangerous job- to face the deadly Alien Queen and her offspring. This movie said, “Screw the grimness” of its prequel and went for deadly weapons, power-suits and more.

This action movie on our list is still fresh, probably why it’s the first Marvel movie here. Endgame, like a lot of the Avengers movies, humanized action superheroes in a certain way.
There was a lot of fighting, fire blazing cannons, fire blazing Captain Marvel, Spidey swinging around on webs and people swinging into battle with swords and shooters. But apart from the adrenaline, this action movie also had some goosebumps raising scenes (Re: “Avengers Assemble”), comedy and emotional reunions. It ranks 5th on the list of top Hollywood action movies.

Directed By | Richard Donner |

The movie that brought Mel Gibson into the spotlight makes number six on our best action movies list. Lethal Weapon 1987 featured a Holmes and Watson worthy duo and brilliantly delivered sardonic humor.
The plot was perfectly engineered putting contrast to good use better than almost any other film of its era. Ex-Navy SEAL Martin Riggs paired with Detective Roger Murtaugh, a complete opposite faced with fighting some of the most dangerous criminals in the city. Who wouldn’t love that when backed up by gory and violent scenes of drugs, execution, torture on one hand and Glover’s warm and sunny suburban family life on the other? Contrast at its best.

Fighting for justice. Isn’t that what almost all our best action movies are ultimately about? The Dark Knight 2008 saw the Dark Knight’s greatest test ever, to fight The Joker emerges with his mysterious past wreaking havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham.
This action movie was terrifying, spooky and weirdly entertaining. It featured some eerie scenes balanced with “Why so serious?” kind of comedy in the right places.
With this movie, Christopher Nolan gave the audience a near-flawless conspiracy thriller, with a truly unique on-screen villain who was unnerving and unhinged for want of a better word than crazy. He made sure it was littered with twists, unpredictable and the sort of film that sticks. It ranks 7th on the list of top Hollywood action movies.

There’s no fate but what we make for ourselves, right? Terminator 2’s director James Cameron certainly made his fate for himself. The most in-demand director in Hollywood at the point this film was made, Cameron made a vision full of destruction come to life on the screen and here this film stands, at number 8 on our action movies list.
Terminator 2 is the kind of film that barely pauses to breathe as scene after scene gets blown up, cars explode, helicopters crash and cities get blasted, leaving behind huge piles of rubble in the wake. Brilliant special effects, clever cyborgs, ingenuity and a big load of talent on the creators’ parts are what make this movie one of the best action movies ever.

There’s bullet-time action combined with deep and important philosophy in one of the best action movies of 1999. And it’s still fresh and enthusiastically acclaimed 20 years later.
The Matrix stars the all-time favorite action movie hero actor Keanu Reeves thrust into the role of a savior who questions his reality at every turn, a cliched and often used concept, but one that the creators of The Matrix gave an exciting twist to. This movie didn’t hold back on using special effects and creating brooding paranoia and at the same time, it kept the plot, characters, and dialogue light. Time. Time is what this action movie puts to use better than any other as picture after picture filed with momentum flashes on the screen. Set in 1936, Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before Adolf Hitler’s Nazis can tap its powers. It results in a high-speed, lack of time chase across the amazing graphics of the Peruvian jungle.
Raiders of the Lost Ark had some old-fashioned, unique vibe giving elements from the very start. The first 12 minutes of the movie in itself was a complete pulse-racer with a dark jungle, a bullwhip, a golden idol, armed tribals, a jump onto a plane and a witty pilot. It’s fast-moving and leaves us with little time to think as supercharged Nazi escapism unfolds before our eyes. It ranks 11th on the list of top Hollywood action movies.

Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2 both make number 12 on our action movies list together. Quentin Tarantino’s action-packed first part features the Bride (Uma Thurman)’s quest for revenge against her former colleagues.
It’s stylish and visually striking and majorly violent with an assassin heroine sword fighting everyone in her path. The second volume takes her journey into more dangerous waters, in conflict with the mighty gang leader, her old boss. Kill Bill may be one of the most violent films on our list, but its dialogue too is impeccable.

The Raid became one of the best action movies of 2011 with an ingeniously simple plot. A SWAT team faced with defeating a block full of enemies to reach the biggest, baddest one at the end. It might’ve sounded video-gamish and monotonous at first, but Evans’ team turned into a mix-up of kicks, punches, shooting and twists in a brilliant show-off of Indonesian martial art techniques.
A fight scene that longer than an hour had never outlasted the tough cinema competition before, but the handsome rising actor Iko Uwais and the overall griminess, suspense and violence were enough to pull it through, quite successfully. And put it at number seventeen on our greatest action movies list.

The writers made it a great combination of funny and violent while keeping the plot straightforward and about the hero wanting to right a wrong ship. Dirty Harry was a 1971 crime thriller that wowed its audience with its badass ahead-of-time elements. It stars a police detective ignoring superior commands and boldly gambling with innocent lives in order to capture a sniper terrorizing San Francisco.
It’s brutal and captivating in its action while thrusting important questions of racism and police brutality into the conversation. Apocalypto is, to simplify it, one long chase taking place in 16th century Guatemala as the Mayan kingdom faces its decline. In a world taken over by fear and oppression, trials are faced and battles fought, all in a dramatic and perilous action piece.
This Mel Gibson action movie was envisioned in a far from modern era world, which means it had to make a thriller with no guns or explosions or car crashes. But it rose to the challenge to give us an equally delightful foot-chase.
23. First Blood

Written By | Sylvester Stallone Michael Kozoll |

“They drew first blood, not me.” First Blood is a crude and raw, featuring John Rambo, an ex-US soldier traumatized by memories of the Vietnam War, who gets into trouble when an incident with a small-town sheriff brings out his violent side. This movie portrays a bitter truth of army officers across the globe in a cruel, dark and anger-filled story. At one point an entire town is set on fire by the characters just to prove a point.
The film has hostilities, confrontations, gunfire, explosions and last of all Sly’s deep emotional meltdown exposing his terrifying reality. This might be a different, more deep, serious and realistic kind of film but it still deserves a spot on our best action movies list.
24. Heat

Starring | Al Pacino Robert De Niro Val Kilmer |

Heat is a 1995 extraordinary crime thriller-drama. It takes the cops vs robbers plot to a whole other level. Lieutenant Hanna, a detective, sets her sights on a book-smart criminal. And this criminal unfortunately has decided to pull off one last robbery before he retires for good.
Heat may not be pure action (why its slightly lower on our best action movies list) but their cat-mouse chase is exciting and passion-driven. This action movie is twisted and gory; it even goes as far as to feature drunk characters gunning down their opponents in cramped Manhattan apartments. 12-year-old Mathilda’s family is killed and her neighbor Leon, a professional assassin takes her in to teach her his trade.

Another Avengers film, but then we’ll never get tired of these. And they deserve a place on our best action movies list. Avengers: Infinity War was a quest in space and land to stop an evil Thanos from getting hold of six stones and destroying half the world’s population.
It involved aliens invading Earth and toppling cars, the greatest warriors reassembling to fight them, a spooky spacecraft and a little Spiderman catapulting all the way from a field trip to save the day. And oh, the ending was, dramatic, to say the least. This action movie had us all yelling “what just happened?” at the screen every five minutes and will go down in the legacy of MCU’s greatest action movies.

Speed, like the name suggests is a fast, against-the-clock race. It has a rather ridiculous, crazy villain sort of plot, but is incredibly effective. A disgruntled, dangerous man plants a bomb in an elevator. And when that fails, he plants a bomb in a local bus and threatens to set it off unless his demand is met.
And that’s how a young police officer comes to the situation of having to keep the city bus running at a speed above 50 mph, or well, the bomb goes off. Speed is a haven for speed lovers and a film that keeps its intensity and noise consistently up, for two hours.

Starring | Chris Evans Sebastian Stan Anthony Mackie |
Release Date | 4 April 2014 |

The last best action movie to make the cut on our action movies list. The Winter Soldier was a brilliant carry forward of Steve Rogers’s story in an epic with Black Widow and Falcon, battling a dangerous new assassin, the Winter Soldier.
This movie pushed action to refreshing heights in a bleaker setting. It made great use of hand-to-hand combat, near misses and a sense of speed and precision to further its action scenes, a perfect example being the memorable highway battle between Rogers and the enemy.
